Description
In the summer of 1988, MR Blare of Wyoming watched as over half of her beloved Park, Yellowstone National Park to others in the US, burned. Smoke and ash fell over her state, blanketing cars, grass, and making it hard for her draw a breath through asthmatic lungs spasming with allergies to cedar and burning sage.
But nothing hurt more than the subsequent visits to the Park and the reminder of that fateful summer and the initial policies which scorched the earth and left scars which to this day can still be seen. The fires had burned so hot as to destroy the precious seed to start new life.
Dirty ponds with stags and ashes remained where deer and antelope once played. Where lush pine and aspen grew.
Now, over ten years later, those stags still reach to the sky but green underbrush has finally filled the forest floor. Deer have returned and winter and spring snows have washed the ash away. Policy has changed with the hope of never to let mankind’s mismanagement scorch so hot once again.
When will a fire like 1988 return to the Park? It will happen but hopefully not as destructive as before.
The stags and ashes are memory enough for eternity.
