Description
'In my prime' is a mixed media painting of a young stag, complete with splendid antlers, standing in bright sunshine on a summer's day. Inspired by the deer roaming the grounds of Powderham Castle near Exeter in Devon, England, I began this painting with some en plein air sketches and watercolour studies. Then, back at home, I used watercolour marker to draw the stag. Once this sketch was complete, I sprayed it with water and dragged a large brush through the drawing as I painted the sky. The background landscape of fields and trees was painted with wet in wet washes while slightly thick paint was used to model the stag and capture the multiple colours reflected off its body.
