Description
While I was not as enthusiastic about bugs as some boys are growing up, I did still find them interesting. My favorite insect was always the stag beetle. It's one of the largest of insects, and I always thought that those mandibles looked really vicious. Though, I learned later that they really don't use them for much other than wrestling with one another. Still it is a cool looking creepy crawly.
Generally bug art is not too popular, but I find that I rather like it as it gave me a chance to do a close up seen of a tree root within a deep dark forest. So, for this artwork, I focused on the moss that grows on the root, the mushrooms growing in the soil, and the polypores (tree fungus) growing on the bark. So not only does the image feature a beetle, it deals with a lot of forest floor growth and fungi.
My goal with this one was to make it not too realistic. Rather, I wanted it more painting like to emphasize art over actuality. So the stag beetle may not be of accurate scale when compared to the mushrooms and other flora in the scene. Moreover the lighting in the scene has been made more dramatic and bright than would normally be in such dense woodland.

This is awesome...and appreciated. My sisters and I would collect these as kids and take bets on which would win in the stag beetle tournaments (yeah...Missouri was a different kinda place to grow up;) Very cool!

You do these so well, even something as creepy as a bug. Love the woodland scene! F/V
