Description
This photo was taken on April 14 in New Sweden, Maine. It has taken a while this year for spring to fully start, but it is definitely started now. A time of great changes in all the natural surroundings, full of rejuvenation and new life. I love seeing and feeling the shear power and beauty of streams and rivers, filled to the brim with snow melt, rushing and charging by. We have set a new record for the most consecutive days with at least an inch of snow on the ground. The previous record of 155 days was set in 2002-2003.
The yellow color in the water is caused by a few factors. This time of year, the large volume of water due to snow melt stirs up quantities of clay with iron mixed in from the river banks. Another factor with this particular stream is an organic component called tannin. This comes from needles from coniferous forests, which this stream mainly runs through, falling into and near the water and slowly decomposing, releasing tannins into the water. This factor is compounded when the stream runs through a large wetland, where other vegetation is slowly decomposing as well and releasing more tannins and lignins (lignin is a component of woody plants or trees, when oxidized it turns yellow).
