Description

On an early morning hike, about an hour after sunrise, through the Sonoran Desert from Lost Dutchman State Park somewhere along the Treasure Loop Trail or Jacobs Crosscut in the Superstition Wilderness in the Tonto National Forest, I found this rock formation. With the sun behind the clouds acting as a giant umbrella softening the harsh sunlight, still holding on to a rich orange light witnessed in the clouds, backlighting this formation, I set my lens to the wide angle 18mm focal length. I shot 5 exposures of this rock, this on being the one chosen to explore visually.

I processed the raw image file shot with a Canon 60D with an 18-55mm IS lens using Photomatix Pro 5, filters from Topaz Labs including Detail 3, BW Effects, ReMask 4 and DeJPEG 4 as well as some minor tweaking in Photoshop including sCurve adjustments, brightness, saturation and the camera raw filter to produce this Black and White HDR image.
