Description
These Sandhill Cranes were gracefully dropping in with a gentle, soft landing in Nebraska to graze in the fields and continue their long migration north. A nearby stream is beneficial until they return at dusk to rest in the Platte River. As they glide in, this image almost makes them appear as puppets on a string dangling above the ground, in my imagination. They delicately touched down among the hundreds already landed, and continued their conversations!
These amazing, beautiful cranes generally winter in Mexico and parts of Florida in the U.S., then begin their spring migration heading north. The majority of them, usually well over 500,000, funnel through Nebraska, landing on the Platte River for several days or weeks, to rest and replenish their needed nutrients which, fortunately, this river does provide. The shallow water and sandbars also help provide protection from predators, such as coyotes. They continue their migration to the upper Midwest in the U.S., or to a vast area of Canada, and about 80,000 of them journey across the Bering Strait and into Siberia! Some of the sandhill cranes living in Florida do not migrate, and those that do usually don’t funnel through Nebraska, but rather head more northerly and end up in the Great Lakes region of the U.S.
Fossil records place sandhill cranes in Nebraska more than nine million years ago, long before there was a Platte River, which, by comparison, is only a youthful 10,000 years old. [outdoornebraska.gov]
