Description
A bust of William Shakespeare sits next to shelves of books at the Trinity College Library in Dublin, Ireland.
The library began with the founding of the college in 1592. In 1801 it was given legal deposit rights,
giving it rights to recieve a copy of every book published in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
The Long Room, pictured here, was built between 1712 and 1732 and houses 200,000 of the Library's oldest books. There are 14 busts, by sculptor Peter Scheemakers on display within the Long Room. The bust of Shakespeare is one of them.
Also on display at the library are: one of the last remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic; the Brian Boru harp which was used as a model for the coat of arms of Ireland and for the trade-mark of Guinness stout; and the infamous Book of Kells.
