Description

This is just one of the many lighthouses that we saw on our sailing trip north to Mount Desert Island. This is the Seguin Island Light Station. Seguin Island is located 2.5 miles off the mouth of the Kennebec River, south of Georgetown Island, near Fort Popham & Popham Beach State Park. I have seen her so many times from Popham Beach, but never from the ocean. Looking at the jagged rocks, you can see why there was a lighthouse built here.
I found this wonderful website all about Seguin Island: https://www.seguinisland.org. This website has all the information about the lighthouse and its history. For example:"Seguin Island Light the only lighthouse north of Virginia with the original First Order Fresnel Lens. Block Island Light in Rhode Island had a new lens installed in 1929 and in 2017 Graves Light in Boston Harbor had a First -order Fresnel Lens installed using lens from other antique lenses." And "The light station was commissioned by George Washington in 1795 and was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places on March 8, 1977."
If you look closely, you can see the tram that was built in 1895. "Before that oxen had been charged with the hauling of goods and materials up the steep 150′ hill. The arrival of the steam engine brought the need to haul coal to various parts of the island and to power the tramway engine. Originally 1006′ in length, the tram’s primary responsibility was to haul coal to feed the fog signals steam engine located at the south end of the island, while oxen still hauled kerosene oil to fuel the lamp inside the Fresnel lens as well as house lamps and cooking."
