Description
While visiting a pumpkin patch where pumpkins and gourds were being sold and displayed in a field, I was able to get some nice close ups of the many sizes and varieties of pumpkins and gourds. This is a semi-close up of one area of the patch that had oodles of pumpkins close together.
Pumpkins are actually a Winter Squash vegetable and is very popular in the Autumn Fall season, used for decorating and for eating. They are in the cucumber and melon family. The flesh can be cooked and used for pies and for savory dishes as well; it is a nutritious food. Their colors are mostly orange and they come in all shapes and sizes. They are native to North America but can be grown all over the world.
Gourds are considered a fruit and are not edible; they have a hard outer shell that are colorful at times and are bumpy too. They have been around for thousands of years and were used as water holders, utensils and other primitive uses. People now days use them for Fall Autumn decorations and some also make birdhouses out of them.
