Description
Sarakiniko is a very unusual beach on Milos Island, Greece, on the north shore of the island. Naming comes from the fact that Saracen pirates looting the islands of Aegean Sea in the past, used the narrow bay and the hidden caves as a hideout. Wind-hewn valleys meander their way down to a turquoise sea, while sea stacks, caves and elegantly curved cliffs arch over the waves. And everything shines white under the bright Aegean sun. Waves driven by north winds shape the greyish-white volcanic rock into amazing shapes, and the area is often compared to a moonscape. The bone-white beach derives its unusual characteristics from the erosion of the volcanic rock by wind and wave. Sarakiniko is one of the most beautiful and strange places in the world.

Yes, a fascinating place - I visited in 2017. I had wondered what the name meant, as I had seen other places called Sarakiniko. Nice phoho.
Dimitrios P replied:
Thanks Paul, there are at least three other places in Greece with the same name, all for the same reason. Lots of pirates till the end of 19th century in the Aegean and Ionian seas...
