Description
Dr. Matilda Evans is the first female physician in South Carolina in the early 1900s. She created hospitals and training center for nurses in Columbia SC. She created the first free clinic for vaccines. She conducted physical exams and provided vaccines in schools. This is a state model today. She established contracts with the railroad to treat injured patients. She ran a hen farm, dairy farm and truck farm to provide nutrition to patients free. Her house is still standing today in Columbia SC. In addition to her work she adopted 6 abandoned infants, 5 nieces and nephews when her sister died and multitude foster children.
