Matera is located in Basilicata, a region of Southern Italy; was declared a UNESCO site in 1993 and European Capital of Culture in 2019, and has a very long history, in fact it is believed that this area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic (10th millennium BC), making this place one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the world ; its original settlement, located in two canyons carved by the Gravina river and known as the Sassi di Matera, is a complex of cave dwellings carved into the ancient canyon. Throughout its history Matera has been occupied by Greeks, Romans, Lombards, Byzantines, Saracens, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese and Bourbons.
