Description

The three large leaves in this still life of autumn leaves on a pebbly woodland path are of special interest. They have fallen from the sassafras tree, Sassafras albidum, which produces leaves of three different shapes on the same tree. One leaf is an unlobed oval, another is bilobed (mitten-shaped), and the third is trilobed (three-pronged). All parts of the tree are aromatic.
