If you are lucky enough to take public transportation from Bilbao Spain to Bakio, and from there walk to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, you are treated to a lovely 2.5 km coastal walk and a few tantalizing peeks of your destination along the way. From afar you can appreciate what a lonely outpost it appears to be while you block out the accoutrements of 21st century tourism. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Biscay Spain with the wild Bay of Biscay all around. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. The ascent to a hermitage at the top is said to be 241 steps, give or take a few steps according to the counts of different websites. But with the beautiful scenery up and down the coast, you find yourself stopping many times along the way and before you know it you are at the top, 80 m above sea level. The hermitage is named Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish, and is dedicated to John the Baptist. There are some indications that it might date from the 9th century, but firmer evidence of its existence in the 10th century. For what looks like a small and insignificant islet today, it has been the scene of several historic events, including being sacked by Francis Drake, being attacked by the Huguenots, and being assaulted by English troops. On a more recent and peaceful note, it was used as a scene in season 7 of the Game of Thrones, standing in for Dragonstone.
