Description
Compared with Notre Dame, the royal chapel of Sainte Chapelle (consecrated in 1248) is rather small and when you walk in on the lower floor, you wonder what the fuss is all about. But the short climb to the upper floor will answer that question! Sainte Chapelle houses the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collection anywhere in the world. The colors are impossibly rich. There are 6458 sq ft of stained glass windows, surrounded by delicate painted stonework. Some windows were damaged during the French Revolution and restored in the 19th century. King Louis IX built the chapel to house what he thought was Christ's crown of thorns. Despite the amazingly beautiful 13th century stained glass, the cost of building the chapel was nowhere near what the king spent to purchase the relic. However, the possession of this relic made him quite powerful. When the chapel was built, it stood within a palace complex but today stands with the Palais de Justice not too far from Notre Dame.
