Description
The white dome of the Catholic Sanctuary drew me closer and I was amazed at the detail of the white dome and the crosses within the round windows above the French Romanesque arches. It was a clear day in February when I decided to photograph Sacred Heart Church, a church with a glorious history on Galveston Island. After shooting many angles I decided upon the close up of the dome with the figure holding the cross on it's top. Sacred Heart Church was the largest church in Texas back in 1892, but was then damaged during the Storm of 1900 which killed over 6,000 people on Galveston Island. All but two stained glass windows, the Mass bell, the statue of the Sacred Heart and the Crucifix were destroyed. These items remain at the church to this day. The church was later rebuilt and consecrated in 1904 and the design reflects influences of the Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic, and the Romanesque styles. This is my rendition, transformed into art for those who enjoy the history and architecture of this stately church.
