This is a reproduction of "Romans Under the Yoke" of 1858 by Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre. The Swiss artist of this depiction of an event in Swiss and Roman history. The Helvetian leader Divicio defeated Roman legions under Cassius Longinus. He allowed the surviving Romans to return to Italy, but only after literally passing under the yoke to symbolize their humiliation. Gleyre was fifty-two when he finished this masterpiece and he died sixteen years later in Paris.
