Description
On the southern edge of Alexandria, next to Jones Point stood Battery Rodgers. The Battery had two cannons, one which was a Rodman Cannon that weighed 49,000 lbs. and fired a 400 lbs ball. It took over 14 lbs of gun powder to launch the cannon ball, and had a range of over 6 kms. When the battery was dismantled the Rodman cannon was transferred across the Potomac River to Fort Foote, which is located in Maryland.
Battery Rodgers was a significant part of the Alexandria and Washington's defense during the Civil War.
