Title
Robin Harvesting Ivy Berry
Artist
Brian Tada
Medium
Photograph - Digital Photograph, Painterly Effect
Description
An American robin (Turdus migratorius) dramatically launches with a berry plucked from an ivy vine growing high up in a tree in the backyard. This picture I took shows the actual angle of the beginning of its flight as it descends from the top of the tree.
There were over a dozen of these colorful and enthusiastic birds joyfully feasting on these berries in late February 2016 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The beautiful song of the American robin is one of the first heralds of spring in many parts of North America.
The robin's primary feeding habits include hunting for and eating fruit such as berries (which constitutes 60% of its diet) and searching for earthworms as it hops along on lawns. This bird's susceptibility to chemicals is a reliable indicator of pesticide over-use.
By keeping our gardens and lawns as pesticide-free as possible, we will help assure the health of these avian beauties for future generations to enjoy.
"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing [of birds]
is come, and the voice of the turtle-dove is heard in our land." Song of Solomon 2:12
Artwork notes::
A painterly effect has been applied to my original photo.
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
