Description
Little did I realize that when I captured this photograph on June 23, 2021 of Moonshadow (N2BHS-CKP) in the bayside campground on Assateague Island, Maryland that she would die with in two weeks. Sadly, the week after I shot this this scene of Moonshadow and her foal, she was hit by a car and succumbed to her injuries about a week later. She was named Moonshadow because she was born during the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. She was discovered by a park ranger on July 6, 2021 and was non-responsive, apparently having died of her injuries.
Her only foal, a chestnut filly (N2BHS-CKPT), was born on April 2, 2021 so is only about 2 1/2 months old as seen in the background of this photograph. She, too was injured and has a lame front hoof.
The Assateague Ponies, as they are affectionately called, are actually feral wild horses who roam Assateague Island north of the Maryland/Virginia state line. Park visitors and campers are continuously reminded by officials and signage to slow down and be observant of the wildlife. Note that there is no "Misty of Chincoteague" here. The horses of Assateague Island are separated into two herds - "Misty" was representative of the Virginia herd.
