Title
Resplendent Quetzal
Artist
Beatriz Portela
Medium
Relief - Block Print
Description
The Resplendent Quetzal has relatively large eyes for a bird, which helps it see in the dim light of the deep forests where it lives. During mating season, males grow tail feathers that form a train as long as 10 feet! With its spectacular plumage, it is considered among the most beautiful birds in the world; and is found in Central America. The quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala and their currency is named after it. Primary threats to quetzals are loss of their tropical forest habitat and being trapped for captivity or for their feathers.
