Remembering Dana Point

There is this place of a youthful time. Long before a harbor and widened highways and freeways, when Capistrano Beach was different than San Juan Capistrano and when San Clemente was way down the road, there was Dana Point.
I learned to surf there, I wandered the sandstone cliffs all the way from Doheny to Killer Dana, tide pools, fish and crab in place with the sea. We all knew each other, small kids like me being watched over by every day surfers and the legends of the sport.
I want to say (Mahalo) thank you to all the people of PCH and Golden Lantern, the Hobie Alter Family, the Harrisons, and Browns, the Pattersons who glassed the boards after the Phil Edwards shaped them. Gordon & Smith, Vic's Market, Gaye's Bait and Tackle......and to Bob Moore, that funny and colorful Doheny Lifeguard that gave me my first surfboard and taught me the sea as he practiced for Tandom surf competitions up and down the coast. It really was "Surf City"!
