Description
Hex signs are a form of folk art related to fraktur in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. These barn paintings, usually in the form of "stars in circles", became popular when commercial ready-mixed paint became available. Commercialized hex signs include stars, compass roses, distelfinks, hearts, tulips, or a tree of life, and are believed to have talismanic or decorative qualities. Some hex sign themes are associated with superstitions, but neither ascribes strong magical power to them. The Amish do not use hex signs.
