You may ask, "What kind of butterfly is this?" My answer is, "It is a Question Mark." This makes me think of the "Who's on first base" comedy routine! That truly is the actual name of this butterfly. It can be difficult to identify because of another butterfly that looks very similar called the Eastern Comma butterfly!

The Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis) is a beautiful orange and black butterfly with sharply angled wing margins, and short tails-like projections. This ventral view of the Question Mark reveals the silver marking from which the name is derived. This underneath side is a mottled brown color and can look like a dried leaf. It is a small/medium size, about 2.2" - 3.0" .

The Question Mark ranges across the eastern two thirds of the United States, from North Dakota down to Texas, and east to the Atlantic coast. If you are looking, you can find these in Ohio! This butterfly is often found in moist woodlands, swamps, parks and residential landscapes.

This particular Question Mark butterfly was quite content on a tall milkweed flower that I have out by my mailbox. I have had to cut down several flowers to protect the mail carrier who was concerned about bees, but I am able to keep some still standing, much to the delight of butterflies and bees. I just want to share that happy bees do not sting people and bees on these gorgeous milkweed flowers are VERY happy bees! When I am taking these photos I have so many bees humming all around me and have yet to be bothered by one! I also want to share that while I sit here typing, I am looking out my front window to see a beautiful Monarch butterfly laying eggs on these very same Milkweed leaves! Monarchs cannot exist without Milkweed plants and so I am pretty protective of my "weeds!"
