Description
West of Quechee Village, Vermont, the Ottauquechee River flows eastward within a broad and shallow valley. Just east of the village, the river turns abruptly southward and plunges into the narrow, rocky cleft of Quechee Gorge, formed by glacial activity approximately 13,000 years ago. The gorge is the deepest in Vermont, and stretches over a mile in length.
The Route 4 bridge crosses over the gorge, affording easy access to views like this one, looking to the south and down onto the rocky river, about 165 feet below. A slightly ominous cloudy sky adds a bit of mood....
