Description
Quaking Aspen give us fall colors arriving at about the same time every year because it is the length of the night that changes the leaves. The nighttime hours are about the same every year after year. Warm days, cool nights, and steady moisture is the best weather recipe for brilliant, long lasting colors. An early freeze or snow usually spells the end of the color show. While on the surface these trees seem like a cluster of individual timber, the truth is that beneath the soil, all the trees are rooted together into one giant organism. Aspens give us pretty spectacular views when autumn rolls around. Aspens are also treasured for the calming melody it emits when the wind flutters its many leaves. A member of the genus Populus, the Aspen tree can grow to heights that range from 40 to 60 feet. Long, skinny, flexible stems which allow the leaves to sway in the slightest breeze. The slightest breeze will cause the leaves of this tree to tremble or "quake", thus the name. Considered as the most widely spread broad leaf tree in North America, the Quaking Aspen is prized for its spectacular fall foliage. The tree, also known as "Golden Aspen with its natural yellow and orange leaf . Its real job in nature is to spread quickly in eroded or burned out areas, providing cover for seedlings of forest trees like pine, fir and spruce. As the other forest trees get older, the aspen die out.The reason is that aspens grow in stands (called clones) and reproduce primarily by sending up sprouts from their roots.
