Description
Purple African Violet - from In The Garden series, by award-winning artists Ben and Raisa Gertsberg, aka BRG, who collaborate under the name It's a Beautiful World!
This favorite houseplant is actually called Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa). It has ruffled trumpet-shaped flowers, is a relative of the African violet and belongs to the same family. Gloxinia plant was first discovered in Brazil, in 1785. Although flower blooms have short lives indoors we were lucky and saw vibrant purple blooms coming back for several years. It was a very special display, we were happy to capture this truly remarkable flower.

Ben and Raisa, Thanks SO much for your absolutely STUNNING purple photoartistry…this one is my favorite…gloxinia were my birthday splurge at the annual Big E spring flower show as a child. I had one just like this velvety beauty and one year I also was allowed to get a red and white one…I raised both them and African violets. Thank you and best to you in Contest!..FAV

With a little research I think you'll find that your plant matches a Gloxinia. I used to grow windows filled with African Violets--until I was blessed with the fourth baby and that was enough to take care of. God filled this world with all kinds of plants and man has been doing his best to add even more varieties--all of which makes this world more interesting. It is a lovely bloom and a very crisp, clear take, right down to the inner freckles. I do like and again, thank you for sharing.
Ben and Raisa Gertsberg replied:
This is, indeed, a Gloxinia! It turns out to be from the same family as African violet - so this may be the reason why the names were mixed up. We had quite a few African violet plants too, but only the Gloxinia plant was blooming season after season. I added a description to this image if you are interested. And thank you so much again, Mary for helping us identify this lovely flower!... Raisa

Gorgeous take--gorgeous flower but it isn't an African Violet.
Ben and Raisa Gertsberg replied:
Thank you for your kind words, Mary, and thank you for letting us know. We bought it as such, it was in a special violet pot and it was coming back year after year - we really enjoyed the blooms. If you have a better name for it we would surely like to know :)... Raisa
