Description
House wrens, while not rare or exotic, are among my favorite birds. They are cheery little souls, albeit on the loud side, at times. (One source referred to them as "loquacious" and another as "effervescent." My husband says they are cheery chirpers.)
These little birds are common visitors to residential areas. They are prone to make a nest without much regard to, or concern about, humans. One tried to build a nest in an artificial Christmas tree in our garage. Another found an empty flower pot right outside our back door and raised a brood there. We have had nests in window boxes on our shed for the last two years. While other birds tend to come and go from our suburban back yard, cardinals and wrens tend to be dependable full-time residents.
One endearing trait of wrens is that they often perch with their tail upright, which contributes to their appealing appearance.
While all house wrens have a cute round build, this little wren is absolutely the plumpest, pudgiest one I have ever seen. And I don't think he (she?) is just fluffed out because we have seen this particular little chunky bird over several days.
I theorized that this was perhaps a female about to lay eggs. However, my cursory research doesn't support that theory and just had unhelpful statements about how different birds have different builds, can appear to have different shapes at different times, etc. Anyway, he/she is adorable and makes me smile. I hope you will, too.
