Description
The Habitation at Port-Royal was the first permanent French settlement in New France, built during the summer of 1605. A small, rectangular stockade surrounding a central courtyard, it was nestled on the north shore of the present-day Annapolis Basin bounding the south side of the Bay of Fundy. Famous explorer Samuel de Champlain, accompanied by colleagues Pierre Du Gua de Monts, Louis Hebert and Sieur de Poutrincourt, established the settlement after a disastrous winter on Ile Sainte-Croix in present-day Maine.
This image started its life as an actual photograph. I have tried to turn it into an old etching such as might have been drawn in the 17th century.
