Porosity With Porogen

Description
There are different ways to make porous materials. This is an artist's creative view of a porous material made using a porogen. A porogen is basically something easily dissolved in solvent that is added in bead format to a polymer (or whatever). Once the filter or membrane is shaped, the porogen is dissolved out from the matrix, leaving behind round pores where the beads used to be. If this is done correctly, the spherical pores will connect (where the porogen beads impinged) and channels result. The pore size can be misleading as a measure of the transport properties of the material. The little necks spanning the pores and not the diameters of the larger pore volumes can limit transport.
