Description
Poinsettias
I did not want to wait until Christmas season to release this piece. Although it WAS this past Christmas when Sherry and I collected a few hundred photos at the annual Lauritzen Gardens Christmas display.
Poinsettias always remind me of a time in my youth when I served as an Altar Boy at Incarnation Church, in Louisville Kentucky. The church and altar were adorned with what has been known as “The Christmas Star”.
It is said that poinsettias’ association with Christmas comes from a Mexican legend. The story goes that a child, with no means for a grander gift, gathered humble weeds from the side of the road to place at the church alter on Christmas Eve. The congregation witnessed a Christmas miracle as the weeds turned into brilliant red and green flowers. While considered by the ancient Aztecs to be symbols of purity, in today's language of flowers the December birth flower symbolizes good cheer and success. Perhaps I should work on a few more?
