With all the artistic and architectural history in the churches in Europe, I canât help but take a peek inside an old church if I find it open. In Pisa, Italy, I found the Chiesa di San Martino open, empty and eerily quiet after the noise of the street. I felt the need to tiptoe so as not to disturb the quiet. Light was streaming through a window and onto this prayer book. Google Translate translates the top of the page as âThe Week of Lent â Mondayâ. I must have gotten there before they had time to turn the page since I was there on a Tuesday! The bottom right page is from the gospel of Luke and starts: At that time, Jesus said to his disciples Be merciful as your father is merciful.: The church originates in 1066 but has been rebuilt/renovated several times in the last millennium.
