Pink Rose Mallow Flowers by Regina Geoghan. Two lovely large rose mallow flowers fully open to the light. Alternate names include swamp mallow and swamp hibiscus. Hibiscus is Latin for "marsh mallow.". This is an native American genus that contains many plants. It is a cold-hardy perennial wetland plant that can grow in large colonies. The hirsute leaves are of variable morphology, but are commonly deltoidal in shape with up to three lobes. It is found in wetlands and along the riverine systems of the eastern United States from Texas to the Atlantic states, its territory extending northward to southern Ontario. They come in many forms and colors ranging from pure white to deep rose with many of them having an 'eye' of deeper maroon color. They are often found in large clusters along riverbanks and in wetlands. They have been cultivated as well and are favorite garden flowers.
