Oh the good old hockey game is the best game you can name! Hockey is more than just the national winter sport of Canada, as it is now considered a global sport. There are professional leagues in North America (the NHL is considered the top league in the world), Europe, Russia, and even Asia now. In North America, the NHL continues to expand to non traditional hockey markets. The annual NHL champion wins the Stanley Cup, one of the most coveted trophies in all of sports. For women, hockey has been growing like crazy. The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) started in 2015 and now has 6 teams in North America. Most importantly, the NWHL is the first women's league to pay players! The annual champion wins the Isobel Cup, named for a daughter of Lord Stanley!
The oldest collegiate men's rivalry is actually Oxford and Cambridge, who played their first Varsity Match in 1885. In the US, the first collegiate game featured Yale versus Johns Hopkins in 1896. Since then, collegiate hockey has grown exponentially, with the Frozen Four the culmination of the NCAA season. Women's college hockey is also growing. Brown University had the first women's NCAA team, created in 1965. Now there are many more opportunities for women to play, like men, at both the D1 and D3 level.
High school and youth hockey has also proliferated. Girl's teams now exist in many non traditional hockey markets, not just Canada, New England or the Midwest anymore.
