Two pineapples growing at Dole Plantation on Oahu in Hawaii. Few people know that the pineapple is a cactus. The fruits, or pineapples, take up to three years to mature. These two have a few more months to grow and ripen.
Some pineapples are picked green just before turning yellow. When shopping for the best pineapples, look for big eyes, then smell the bottom where it used to be connected to the stalk. If you get a good sweet pineapple smell, along with the big eyes, you've got a treat in store.
There is also a relatively new pineapple coming out of Hawaii. It started with the Kona pineapple but is now growing on all islands. It's a much smaller pineapple but the acid is gone. Curiously, the top crown or leaves grows crooked.
Many varieties of pineapples exist, especially since hybridization has been successful. At the Dole Plantation you can see nearly all the varieties of pineapples growing on their farm. It's a walk-thru plantation with all the different plants labeled. Great image Mary. I have a pineapple growing in my front yard that I started from a pineapple. I haven't seen a fruit yet, but it is still pretty small. These look very healthy, no brown on the tops at all. L/shared
