I had gone to the beach for some sunrise photos, on my way home taking backstreets through my neighborhood I spotted some Pileated Woodpeckers flitting around from tree to tree and yard to yard. I found a place to park my truck so that I could watch them and catch a few shots. The neighborhood is full of mature Live Oak trees which is a favorite habitat for these large woodpeckers. I'm not sure how many of them were flying around, but they seemed to be having a great time. The didn't set still very long before heading off to another tree to have a breakfast tidbit from it.
The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America. They have a distinct loud vocal call and can be heard whacking at dead logs and trees in search of their favorite food, carpenter ants. Their beaks leave unique rectangular holes in the wood. The male Pileated Woodpecker has a red stripe on it's check. The female has a dusky forehead and mustache cheeks.
