What on this glorious early autumn morning looks like a peaceful picnic spot is part of the grounds of the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero, the sanctuary on top of the hill above Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre region of Italy. Every of the five Cinque Terre villages has its personal Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgen Mary to which the residents are attached by a deep devotion. For centuries the residents of the Cinque Terre towns have gathered in their sanctuary to pray for protection from the dangers of the seafaring life, from enemies on land, and from a harsh everyday existence. Accidents and landslides were common, as were invasions of pirates and of various barbarian populations. Everyday life involved eking out a farming existence on steep cliffsides, in the process building thousands of km of stone walls without any cement. Consequently, each village built its own sanctuary dedicated to Mary, calling upon her to protect the villagers from the dangers of both sea and land. Today, that devotion is still evident even though life is much less precarious. I visit this spot every time I go to the Cinque Terre, usually on the first day of my visit if it is going to be a pretty day. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
