Description
Philadelphia-Billy Penn. This sculpture of William Penn is the most prominent landmark in Philadelphia. Sculpted by Alexander Milne Calder, it stands 36feet tall and weighs 53,000+ lbs. It was completed in 1892 and hoisted to the top of City Hall in 1894. The statue was placed with Billy facing the northeast, in the direction of Penn Treaty Park. This is the location of the Lenape village of Shackamaxon, where Penn entered into a peace agreement with Tamanend, a chief of the Lenape Turtle Clan in 1683 under what became known as the treaty elm. The elm tree fell during a storm in 1810. The Penn Historic Society erected a statue in it’s place.
