A beautiful natural abstract in brown tones featuring a cross-section of a petrified tamarack tree and its twisted grains. This fascinating one-color nature study would work either horizontally or vertically.
Tamarack is a species of larch native to Canada, from eastern Yukon and across Canada, toward the east. Somehow it eventually made its way to Houston, Texas, where this picture was taken.
This deciduous conifer, Larix laricina, is a small to medium boreal coniferous and deciduous tree reaching 10-20 M (33-66 ft) tall. The bark is tight and flaky, pink, but under the flaking bark it can appear reddish. Most significant in this image: the survival of this tamarack tree in such detail. By nature, the wood is tough and durable, resistant to rot.
