Pen Pixel Royal Lion
Drawing - Copic Multiliner On Paper
Based on a photo I took in Oslo, Norway in 2008, I have turned this regal statue of a lion into a 150x210 pixel artwork, drawn in A3 size with a 0.1mm technical pen, something which took a full week of work.
I quite like the pixel art aesthetic, but though it is easy to create as a purely digital artwork, I much prefer the organic look of the hand-drawn version: at a distance you see the lion almost as a high-contrast photo, closer you see the pixels that together create the optical illusion of depth, light and shade at the further distance; but as you get closer still, you see each pixel is hand drawn, no two exactly the same shape or size, the black pixels consisting of several visible lines running across them where the small pen has filled it in, making for an organic texture that could only be created by hand.
