Digital Art - Photo Manipulation
The sword in this image is real. I carved it out of a 1"x4" piece of Oak, etched the design using a rotary tool, stained the wood, painted the etchings, drilled a hole in the blade and inserted a glass stone. It was then finished with two coats of polyurethane and a hand wrapped the grip. To create this image, I took a picture of the sword and manipulated using enhancement and lighting filters in the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). The sword's total length from "tip" to "pommel" is just over 42". The reason for creating the sword was for my son who is an avid martial artist and wanted to make a wooden sword. To determine what tools were needed, I made this sword. It turned into a wonderfully enjoyable father/son activity resulting in 3 swords in all. This particular sword was also used to create another piece entitled "Guarded Heart" which also appears here on FAA (click my name in the upper right of this page then click on "images").
