Actually, you are both correct Valerie Neely and Matthew Autenrieb. The sword is real. I carved it out of a 1"x4" piece of Oak, etched the design using a rotary tool, stained the wood, painted the etchings, drilled a hole in the blade and inserted a glass stone. I finished it with two coats of polyurethane and hand wrapped the grip. Once finished, I took a picture and used that image to create this work. The sword's total length from "tip" to "pommel" is just over 42". My son is an avid martial artist and wanted to make a wooden sword. So, to determine what tools were needed, I made this sword. It turned into a wonderfully enjoyable father/son activity. This same sword was also used to create the piece entitled "Guarded Heart" (click my name in the upper right of this page then click on "images"). Be sure to read the descriptions for each image you view as they provide additional insights. Appreciate the feedback!

You know what it looks like to me, Matt..is the body of the sword is having a sort of convex effect, so that is why the handle is the size and angle it is.. Just a suggestion..

To be clear, the sword is an actual wood sword in a physical sense? Then, a photo of the sword was incorporated into the digital image of the paper? Very nicely done. The handle for the sword seems a bit small. What tools were used to create the sword? The illusion of the cut would be more convincing if the pattern of the revealed area didn't carry into the fabric? being cut. I understand the cut fabric could very well be sheer, but a bit more curl on the cut area of the fabric would be more believable. Overall effect is good and somewhat abstract. Matt
