Title
Pair Of Female Hooded Mergansers
Artist
Carla Parris
Medium
Photograph - Digital Photograph
Description
A pair of female hooded mergansers are swimming in the Wakulla River in northwest Florida.
One of these gals appears to be having a serious bad hair day, with the feathers on her head tightly slicked back. In actuality, the crests of these ducks can be spread or closed, somewhat like a fan, and the duck with the bad hair look just has not spread her crest, as the foreground duck has done.
Female hooded mergansers have the lovely cinnamon crests seen here. Males have even more dramatic black and white crests, with touches of cinnamon on their bodies.
These birds migrate to northwest Florida during the cold months. They are among the many water fowl which can be seen at The Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park.
