You get the smooth tones, by mixing the paint in this manner. Its a lot easier to show, than tell. :( Put a pile of color, say Indian Red on the Palette. With a knife, spread it across so it is thick on one end and thin on the other. Put a pile of white or we use gesso next to it. Spread it, so it is thicker at the think end of the red, and thin at the other end. Then, mix it together, back and forth across the two lines of paint. You now have an infinite variation of shades of Indian Red, from Light to dark. ONLY use as much Gesso, do not drag it completely to the thick end of the red, so some of it is full color. Do that with each color used. Have been using a flat piece of heavy glass for a palette that I bought in a framing store, cut to fit in the box I sue for storage of my palatte. This makes it much easier to mix paint, and also for clean up later. With acrylic if its dried, I just use a putty knife to skim the paint off where it is thick. Then rinse it with Dawn and water. Living in an RV, cant allow ANY paint to get into the gray water tank.

Striking capture of this fine monumental wonder, Bob! Love the angle of shot, as it highlights the curves and angles of the rock faces very well! Just love this one!

Bob and Nadine Johnston replied:
Have thousands of photos of the canyon, but as much as I like some, like many of the painting better. Sharp photos to me seem to have a lot of distracting detail. With the paintings can eliminate a lot, though dont do it with all, to give a more realistic look.
