Description
Whenever I take a class at a college, I tend to be drawn to the Art History type classes. I think I have taken 5 different ones from 5 different colleges. (I know that sounds weird but I have studied a few different things in my life time.) I love learning about the Masters in Art.
Henri Matisse is one of my favorites. Matisse was a French artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter
Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.[6] His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. I have often thought this quote was so deep, powerful yet so true. It states: There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.
As quoted in obituaries (5 November 1954)
