Description
St. Marks lighthouse in FL.SAINT MARKS LIGHTHOUSE
Gulf of Mexico
South of Tallahassee FL
The tower here dates back to 1867, but lighthouses at this location were built as early as 1831 and 1840. Shoddy workmanship and erosion did in the first two lights here that mark the entrance to the St. Marks River in the pan handle of Florida. The trip to the light takes the visitor through one of the most interesting National Wildlife Preserves in the state. Bald eagles are most evident there. The light and keeper’s house are not open to visitors, but the grounds are open and one gets the feeling of what it must have been like to be a keeper on a deserted location such as this.
