Description
Petrified Forest National Park preserves the colorful badlands of the Painted Desert, stands of petrified wood, a portion of Route 66, and the historic Painted Desert Inn. Entrepreneur Herbert David Lore opened the Inn around 1920; the National Park Service acquired the property in 1935. Lore's original structure was made of petrified wood. The present adobe exterior dates to a National Park Service renovation in the 1930s. The Pueblo Revival style structure sits atop a mesa overlooking the colorful Painted Desert and now houses a Trading Post shop and museum.
Painted Desert Inn rests well within the landscape. I love photographing this historic landmark and its surroundings. The gently slopped adobe walls remind me of motifs found in Georgia O'keefe's paintings of the Southwest.
