Description
The Painted Desert is just off I40 in Arizona. As you drive through the Petrified Forest, you move into an area that is a color wonder. As a child, I was mesmerized by a vial of colored sand purchased by my grandfather on a trip to the east. He and my grandmother stopped by the Painted Desert and purchased it at the gift store.
Now that they have passed on, I have that precious vial…and have been in love with the desert southwest since then.
This photo was not taken at the prime time too capture the rich colors at sunset, but it does show the vocanic hills that have been etched into different shapes by the wind and water erosion over thousands and millions of years.
If you look directly to the left, you will see a piece of Petrified wood - actually a tree, that was washed to this edge of the painted desert. A large mesa which has withstood the effects of the erosion, stands its ground.
