Description
"Orleans County Courthouse, Vermont" by Catherine Sherman.
The Orleans County Courthouse stands in a prominent place on Main Street in Newport, Vermont. The courthouse, built in a Queen Anne and Romanesque style in 1886 is part of a complex that includes a wood-frame jailer's quarters built in 1886 (now housing the sheriff's office), and a 1903 brick jail, behind the courthouse. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. In the distance are visible the spires of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Newport sits on the shores of Lake Memphremagog.
Orleans County is on the border with the province of Quebec, Canada, and is in the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont.
