Luminescent, fiery orange embers burn within the bowels of a shelf cloud hovering like a spacecraft in the darkening sky above deep purple mountains in the New Mexico desert.
New Mexico is known for its spectacular sunsets and I’ve witnessed many, but the pale lilacs and smoky magentas swirling above the volcanic edge of this shelf cloud was truly breathtaking and just a little bit scary. Sure enough, the storm came on like gangbusters the next day, bringing massive hail and lightning. It stormed like crazy for days, flooding my campsite in the Tularosa Basin and forcing me to flee to town for shelter.
